Dr. Panagiotis Kastritis investigates how proteins interact using state-of-the-art scientific methods. Since August 1, the Greek-born junior professor for “Cryo-electron microscopy of membrane protein complexes” is appointed at the University of Halle.

If one wants to investigate the structure of proteins, one has a problem: The molecules that fulfill all possible functions in the human body are far too large and too mobile for most methods. Cryo-electron microscopy provides a remedy here, enabling also a much higher resolution compared to other competitive methods.

“In my work, I combine cryo-electron microscopy with computer-assisted structural biology,” explains Panagiotis Kastritis. Using the microscopy data, he can create 3D models of the proteins on the computer and thus investigate their structure much more precisely. “This enables us to investigate the interaction of several proteins and, for example, observe the complex metabolic reactions of a cell at the molecular level” said the 34-year-old. His post in Halle is the Centre for Innovation Competence ZIK “HALOmem” of the University, where he heads a junior research group. Over the next few months, he not only plans to set up his laboratory there, but also to establish direct contact with other protein researchers in Halle and to launch joint research projects.

Kastritis studied biology in the University of Athens. He received his doctorate at the University of Utrecht with a thesis on computer-based structural biology. Until his last position he worked at the renowned European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg

Charles Tanford Protein Centre Opening Symposim 12th October 2018

Opening of the “Protein Center Charles Tanford” on August 28, 2017

Seminars

Past Dates

20.06.2019
Dr. Maria Hoernke (BIOSS, Universität Freiburg)
“Quantified Efficiency of Membrane Leakage Events Relates to Antimicrobial Selectivity”

21.03.2019
Prof. Sandro Keller (TU Kaiserslautern)
“Polymer-based nanodiscs for membrane biophysics”

27.02.2019
Dr. Jana Gerstmeier (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena)
“Bacterial infection triggers lipid mediator pathways in human macrophages – How to target?”

20.09.2018
Dr. Agata Witkowska (Max-Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen)
“Early membrane fusion intermediates in synaptic vesicle exocytosis”

06.11.2017
Prof. Shabaz Mohammed (Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Oxford, UK)
“Proteomics of Intestinal Adult Stem Cells and Organoids”

19.10.2017
Jun.-Prof. Dr. Nina Morgner (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry),
“LILBID-mass spectrometry: interrogating non-covalent complexes”

22.8.2017
Matteo Degiacomi, PhD (Durham University, Department of Chemistry, UK),
“Mass Spectrometry Based Modelling of Macromolecular Assemblies”

Jobs

PhD position in part-time (65%)

The Research Training Group (RTG) 2670 ”Beyond Amphiphilicity: Self-Organization of Soft Matter via Multiple
Noncovalent Interactions” offers a PhD position.
