Our university itself also offers the advantage of these \u201cshort distances\u201d. The centrally located university square is one of the most beautiful in Europe and one of the most traditional in Halle. The new Steintor Campus is home to many humanities and social science institutes, and the Francke Foundations (\u201cFranckesche Stiftungen\u201d) in Halle are home to the educational sciences and theology. Institutes of natural sciences of our university are concentrated on the Weinberg\/Heide Campus in the north-west of Halle in the vicinity of five non-university research institutes and the Weinberg-Campus Technology Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wish you a good start for your research and an exciting and successful path to your doctorate at our university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what_to_know\">What you need to know<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>There is no central application procedure. Would you like to do that in the context of a doctorate? Are you planning to present your idea to your preferred professor to apply as a candidate for supervision? It\u2019s time to write your expos\u00e9!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expos\u00e9 provides an overview of your planned research work. It links your research question with a plan for its investigation. Please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.urz.uni-halle.de\/ingra\/science-at-mlu-some-research-prospects-for-early-career-scientists-in-halle\/\">Research at MLU: Some research prospects for early career scientists in Halle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"supervision\">Supervision<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship between doctoral researchers and their supervisors influences the pathway and success of a doctoral project and is a crucial factor for the start of an academic career (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/03075070500249161\" target=\"_blank\">Ives&nbsp;<em>&amp;<\/em>&nbsp;Rowley 2007<\/a>). It is thus all the more important that both parties deal with the perspective, expectations and needs of the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please check \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.urz.uni-halle.de\/ingra\/what-supervisors-want\/\">What supervisors want<\/a>\u201d for more insights into the relationship between supervisors at MLU and their doctoral students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<span id=\"Supervision_agreement\"><h5>Supervision agreement<\/h5><\/span>\n\n\n\n<p>In so far as the doctoral regulations do not already provide for the conclusion of a doctoral agreement (supervision agreement) between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor, we recommend that such an agreement is concluded in writing to ensure quality and transparency in the doctoral phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement should be used promptly at the start of academic work on the thesis to serve as an understanding between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor with regard to the nature of the supervision and for the exchange of mutual expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis of such an agreement is generally a synopsis of the thesis written by the doctoral candidate in conjunction with a personal development plan, which should be continuously updated during the course of working on the thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that, when organising the general layout of the supervision agreement, doctoral candidates familiarise themselves with the template recommended by the Senate. However, the specific agreements are flexible by mutual agreement and may be made in accordance with specific conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#start\">back to top<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"acceptance\">Acceptance and admission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js is-open\" data-initially-open=\"true\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-32820\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Acceptance as a doctoral student<\/h5><div id=\"ac-32820\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Acceptance as a doctoral candidate at one of the faculties of MLU has been standardised across the university in 2015. Prospective doctoral candidates apply via <a href=\"https:\/\/loewenportal.uni-halle.de\/portal\/rds?state=verpublish&amp;publishContainer=applicationForm1&amp;menu_open=n&amp;noDBAction=y&amp;init=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HalDoc<\/a> \u2013 the central online portal of MLU \u2013  for acceptance as doctoral candidates within the first year. Please make sure that you have followed the guidance on the respective faculty webpages when applying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By accepting someone as a doctoral candidate, the respective faculty declares its willingness in principle to entrust the doctoral candidate with the writing of the thesis and to examine it upon completion. Furthermore, admission as a doctoral candidate formally determines that the doctoral candidate will be admitted to the doctoral examination procedure following completion of his\/her thesis, if he\/she submits the documents required for admission to the doctoral examination procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctoral candidates who gained their Master\u2019s degree abroad,  will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmk.org\/zab\/statement-of-comparability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examined for equivalence<\/a> to a German Master\u2019s degree during the processing of the application. Equivalence is the formal pre-requisite for doing a doctorate in Germany\/Halle.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-32821\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Admission to the doctoral examination procedure<\/h5><div id=\"ac-32821\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>After completion of your thesis and, if applicable, you have fulfilled the subject-specific obligations that arose upon acceptance as a doctoral student, you will be required to apply for admission to the doctoral examination procedure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please find more details in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingra.uni-halle.de\/doctoral_regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doctoral regulations<\/a> that apply to you and\/or speak with your supervisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relevant form for this procedure is also available online in German or English via <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/loewenportal.uni-halle.de\/portal\/rds?state=verpublish&amp;publishContainer=openingForm&amp;menu_open=n\" target=\"_blank\">HalDoc<\/a>. They members represent the whole bandwidth of doctoral candidates\/students in different positions: from scientific staff over scholarship holders to those doing their PhD externally. The representatives  do this in the individual faculty councils as well as in the university\u2019s senate. They have the right to speak and to propose motions, but no voting rights of our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the representation stands for: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>improve the working, living, teaching and learning conditions during your PhD, <\/li><li>fight for acknowledgement of your efforts and achievements within the university and <\/li><li>give young scientist a strong voice.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The representatives also want to provide important information and contact points for you in a central place and keep you updated about developments concerning the status of PhD candidates\/students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.urz.uni-halle.de\/promovierendenvertretung\/en\/292-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Link to website<\/a> of the doctoral representation<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-32826\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Good scientific practice<\/h4><div id=\"ac-32826\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Academic work in general, and particularly in relation to obtaining a doctoral degree, rests on basic principles that apply equally across all academic disciplines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Establishment of truth and the progression of knowledge based thereon require academic honesty, diligence and open discourse. These form the basis for the rules of academic practice that vary from discipline to discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctoral candidates are required to adhere to these basic principles because they form an important prerequisite in preventing and avoiding academic misconduct, in the preservation of the ethical principles of science and, therefore, the reputation of Halle University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCharter on the principles for ensuring good scientific practice and on the handling of allegations of academic misconduct at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg\u201d, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verwaltung.uni-halle.de\/KANZLER\/ZGST\/ABL\/2024\/24_01_01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link<\/a> in German)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good Scientific Practice comprises the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Observing the general principles of academic work, particularly<ul><li>working lege artis,<\/li><li>recording results,<\/li><li>consistently challenging one\u2019s own results,<\/li><li>preserving strict honesty in relation to the contributions of partners, competitors and predecessors,<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Collaboration and responsibility for leadership in workgroups,<\/li><li>Coaching of young academics,<\/li><li>Securing and storing primary data,<\/li><li>Academic publications as the medium of accountability of academics with regard to their work,<\/li><li>Respect for the property of other parties,<\/li><li>Observing ethical standards in conducting investigations.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-32827\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Differences in academic cultures<\/h4><div id=\"ac-32827\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>In the natural sciences and life science you first look for a supervisor. In the second step you discuss possible research topics for your doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the humanities and social sciences you first identify a topic yourself and then look for a supervisor in the second step.
