Als erste Sprecherin („Madame Speaker“) des US-Repräsentantenhauses hat Nancy Pelosi Geschichte geschrieben – und das gleich zweifach. Von 2007 bis 2011 und erneut seit 2019 hat sie dieses herausgehobene Amt inne gehabt. Gestern hat sie in einer Rede deutlich gemacht, dass sie sich mit nunmehr 82 Jahren aus der Führung der Demokratischen Partei im US-Kongress zurückziehen will, wenn der soeben neu gewählte Kongress Anfang Januar 2023 zu seiner konstituierenden Sitzung zusammentreten wird. Bereits zuvor hatte sie die Funktion der Fraktionsvorsitzenden der Demokraten („Minority Leader“) inne, als diese noch in der parlamentarischen Minderheit waren. Abgeordnete will und wird Pelosi, die im Übrigen einen Bachelor in Politikwissenschaft absolviert hat, bleiben, erst in der vergangenen Woche ist sie in ihrem Heimatwahlkreis San Franciso mit knapp 84 Prozent der Stimmen wiedergewählt worden. Dem Repräsentantenhaus gehört sie seit 1987 an, als sie damals im Alter von 47 Jahren für ihr erstes politisches Amt kandidiert hatte. Seitdem war sie viele Male gefahrlos wiedergewählt worden. Insbesondere als gewiefte politische Strategin, etwa gegenüber dem damaligen Präsidenten Donald Trump, und als Zugpferd und Spendensammlerin in zahllosen Wahlkämpfen hat sie ihrer Partei ihren Stempel aufdrücken können.
