Stirring Waves American Samoa and the Fight for Equal Rights

Fa’a Samoa

The Samoan culture revolves around the authority of family.

Samoans were able to mostly sustain tradition and culture despite modern (western) influential contact of the early 19th century.

Live is shaped by the thought of fa’a Samoa. Fa’a can be translated as „in the way of“ – they basically exercise the Samoan way of living.

Fa’a Samoa is based on two pillars: aiga and matai.

Aiga means family. It is the basis of political power in Samoan culture. Each aiga has a matai. The matai is the holder of family chief titles and takes care of the aiga’s communal land and property.
