Yesterday, we awarded Julia Woskowski, this year’s image contest winner, her well-deserved prize: the winning picture on a large-format canvas.

Julia’s winning picture, “Volleyball”, took the hearts of our visitors by storm. Her fascinating picture shows spodumene, an important mineral for lithium extraction, under a scanning electron microscope. The image illustrates the aesthetic side of science and its practical significance: most of the leached minerals are left behind as residue. She is working on a project to find solutions to avoid landfill sites, such as using these residues in the cement industry, thereby making a significant contribution to environmental sustainability.
