Western portal of Halberstadt cathedral

The Halberstadt cathedral’s western portal is regarded one of the most important late Romanesque portals in Central Germany. Following the reconstruction and cleaning of the portal area within the last years, the type, its sculpture as well as the artistic program are about to be analyzed in order to verify former interpretations.

In 2011, the ERZ hosted a section at the “Forum Kunst des Mittelalters” (Forum Medieval Art) in Halberstadt. An ERZ workshop presented actual studies on that portal in March 2011. These discussions and studies had been continued and intensified during another workshop in May 2012.
