The European Romanesque Center, also known by its abbreviation ERZ, is an interdisciplinary and interfaith society. Its expertise is based on scholars of numerous subjects such as Architecture, Art History, History, Archaeology, Theology as well as Legal History of the Middle Ages of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Furthermore, plenty monuments of medieval art and architecture of Saxony-Anhalt and its well-known touristic link – the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik) – inspired regional experts and international counselors founding the ERZ in 2006.
Since 2008, the ERZ is an private research institute attached to the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, residing at the southern and eastern parts of the cathedral enclosure in Merseburg, Germany.
The ERZ aims to research and communicate on the different aspects of European Romanesque art and architecture within a circle of academic experts as well as to adress broader public. Therefore, many projects, symposiums and lectures are promoted and given. Several periodicals and publications document on the society’s activity. The ERZ also considers itself as a unique platform to support the research of young scholars.
For its research and educational endeavors the society also provides a lecture hall, a steadily growing library as well as accommodation facilities for visiting scholars and fellows.
