The under-representation of women in academic leadership positions remains an urgent problem. Science organisations should therefore pursue the goal of attracting and retaining the best talent regardless of their gender – as well as their national origin, age, etc. – not only because of increased competition, but precisely because of their influential role in society. Another incentive is the observation that diverse teams – when taking into account individual needs and living conditions – verifiably achieve better research results and obtain multi-perspective views of their subject.

In our workshop, ways in which unconscious biases function were be analysed and made personally perceivable without asking the “question of guilt”. On the one hand, there was room for personal reflection on previous experiences and, on the other hand, some popular test strategies for unconscious bias were presented. Together we defined what gender and diversity competence means in your everyday academic work and how you can continuously develop it.

Afterwards, on the level of implementation, we worked with you on strategies for gender- and diversity-sensitive communication methods and teamwork, as well as perspectives for a leadership and organizational culture that frames these. In doing so, we constantly incorporate impulses for tried-and-tested anti-bias measures. The workshop offered space for reflection, exchange and professionalization of your gender and diversity competence.

You have to publish papers in journals, it’s an essential part of research. To help you there´s our “Writing Day“. This Writing Day provided participants with the experience and feedback that´s key to improving your scientific English writing, recognizing problems and solving them.

The idea of our Writing Day was that Dr Andrew Davis give comprehensive feedback on writing plus an introduction to good scientific writing.

The process is as follows. First, participants sent their texts to Dr Davis. Then Dr Davis examined and reviewed these texts for language proficiency, structure, comprehensiveness and style. After about a week, he sent the texts back with notes and comments. Then he presented a short introduction to good scientific writing in Leipzig or in Halle. After that he helped individually to revise texts. He also advised you on techniques to improve writing or on such things as avoiding writers’ block.
