Career workshop: Know your competencies – find your job (March 6-7, 2017)

Careers in German universities and research institutes are difficult. Towards the end of your PhD or at the beginning of your postdoctoral years you need to decide whether you like to continue your career up to the professor or if you leave academia and public funded research institutes. This step is difficult to the biggest part of PhD-students because until then they did not find or try alternative career paths.

Target audience

Doctoral students, PostDocs

Topics

In the workshop we will first find out which competencies you have gained until now. You will learn to know different techniques to explore and to express your competencies. To be able to express them is at the same time relevant for application – our second workshop in June deals with this topic.

Based on the competencies we will explore the labour market: How is the German and how are international labour markets structured, what is the difference between the public and the private sector etc.? We will than develop ideas of job profiles that fit you. Especially we will talk about typical jobs for physicists and chemists.

You will receive an introduction to the job search and to different strategies of job hunt. You will learn to know relevant job listings, the use of networks and more. We will talk about how to read job offers and how to make sure you are the right person to send an application.

In addition we will consider at what point you should start to apply: How long can you manage to leave academia with success?

Please bring an internet-enabled notebook or tablet with you – we will need it for the job search.
