The SFB/TRR 102 arranged an excursion to the Processing Pilot Plant for Biopolymers Schwarzheide on the February 21st, 2018. This research institution was a part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP). Members of the SFB together with its integrated research training group of Martin-Luther-Universität and Universität Leipzig got an insight into research and the facilities of FhI and BASF in Schwarzheide. UV-B induced changes of eye-lens crystallins
Age related cataract is the major cause of blindness worldwide. With the age of 75 years, more than 50% of all people are affected and so far, surgery is the only effective treatment available. For this reason it is important to understand the complex system of the eye lens especially effects of aging like chronic UV-B irradiation.
Many modifications of crystallins by UV-B on already aggregated and destroyed protein have been found. So far, changes in the soluble fractions of the protein are not well investigated. Answering this question, different techniques of solution NMR have been applied to native and irradiated hgD-crystallin to identify and characterize a modified but still soluble state of the protein. This would highlight the first structural changes on the transition from functional soluble protein to dysfunctional aggregates.

Molecular Dynamics and Charge Transport in highly-conductive Polymeric Ionic Liquids
Glassy dynamics and charge transport are studied for the polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) poly[tris(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)ammonium acryloxypropyl sulfonate] (PAAPS) with varying molecular weight (9700, 44200, 51600, and 99500 g/mol) by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) in a wide frequency (10−2−107 Hz) and temperature range (100−400 K) and by DSC- and AC-chip calorimetry.
The dielectric spectra are characterized by a superposition of (i) relaxation processes, (ii) charge transport, and (iii) electrode polarization. Continue reading “Talk by F. Frenzel at UL (October 24, 2017)”
3rd iRTG Workshop (November 20-21, 2017)
Aims
This workshop addresses doctoral students in chemistry, physics, biophysics, and related fields in the iRTG “Polymers: random coils and beyond”. The doctoral students will introduce the basic theoretical and technical concepts necessary for an understanding of projects within the iRTG. The iRTG workshop focuses on experimental and theoretical techniques to study synthetic polymer and biopolymer systems. Continue reading “3rd iRTG Workshop (November 20-21, 2017)”
International PhD Meeting, October 13th 2017
On October 13, 2017, the International Office and the International Gra- duate Academy InGrA organised via the PhD Network that year’s Welcome Meeting “International PhD Meeting 2017”.
The meeting was intended for doctoral candidates who had just started with their doctorate as well as for those who were already further along with their thesis.
The event aimed at greeting newcomers, giving information about first steps at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and in the city of Halle and at introducing consultation and support services at the university. Doctoral candidates who were in the middle of their doctorate or who were about to finish their dissertation were given information on the admission to and the process of the doctoral procedure at the respective faculty. Also, there was room for the participants to ask questions and to get in contact with each other about topics relevant to their PhD.
Registration and programme:

Please email your questions or special requests for topics to phd.network@international.uni-halle.de
Registration until October 5, 2017
Presentation and Rhetoric (January 23-24, 2018)
More than ever, sophisticated presentation skills were vital to one’s professional career in academia.
Junior scientists were regularly called upon to present the results of their research, rarely having been given formal training in presentation skills.
The main focus of this workshop was to help participants master the art of persuasive and compelling presentations and to enhance their rhetorical skills.
