Why still care about equal opportunities in the 21st century? Status quo, challenges, and new perspectives. (Online lecture impulse on July 6, 2022; 16.00-17.00)

The under-representation of women in academic leadership positions remains an urgent problem. Science organisations should therefore pursue the goal of attracting and retaining the best talent regardless of their gender – as well as their national origin, age, etc. – not only because of increased competition, but precisely because of their influential role in society. Another incentive is the observation that diverse teams – when taking into account individual needs and living conditions – verifiably achieve better research results and obtain multi-perspective views of their subject.

Raising awareness: identify needs for action, adapt working methods and find ways of implementation (July 5, 2022)

In our workshop, ways in which unconscious biases function will be analysed and made personally perceivable without asking the “question of guilt”. On the one hand, there will be room for personal reflection on previous experiences and, on the other hand, some popular test strategies for unconscious bias will be presented. Together we will define what gender and diversity competence means in your everyday academic work and how you can continuously develop it.

Afterwards, on the level of implementation, we would like to work with you on strategies for gender- and diversity-sensitive communication methods and teamwork, as well as perspectives for a leadership and organizational culture that frames these. In doing so, we will constantly incorporate impulses for tried-and-tested anti-bias measures. The workshop offers you space for reflection, exchange and professionalization of your gender and diversity competence.

[BEAM] Academic Writing (March 21-22, 2022)

“Writing is an essential part of the successful researcher’s skillset.  However, writing at the standard necessary to publish in peer-reviewed journals can be challenging. This two-day writing workshop is for researchers who wish to improve their academic writing skills in English.
This practical workshop will focus on the structure of an English paper and abstract and how to improve the style and readability of an academic text. Participants are encouraged to bring along a sample of their current writing that will be the basis for peer review on the second day of the course.  In addition, participants should bring at least two examples of research articles from their field (written by native English speakers if possible).”

English Writing Day (May 9, 2022)

You have to publish papers in journals, it’s an essential part of research. To help you there´s our “Writing Day“. This Writing Day provides you with the experience and feedback that´s key to improving your scientific English writing, recognizing problems and solving them.

The idea of our Writing Day is that Dr Andrew Davis gives you comprehensive feedback on your writing plus an introduction to good scientific writing.

The process is as follows. First, you send your texts to Dr Davis. Then Dr Davis examines and reviews these texts for language proficiency, structure, comprehensiveness and style. After about a week, he sends the texts back with notes and comments. Then he will present a short introduction to good scientific writing in Leipzig or in Halle. After that he will help each of you individually as you revise your texts. He will also advise you on techniques to improve your writing or on such things as avoiding writers’ block.
