Written by

Leaving academia and looking for a job in the industry is an important and sometimes difficult step. This intensive course enables you to go through a quickly and successful job search process. It consists of live webinars and self-learning videos.

Content

  • Determination of salaries
  • Preparation and phases of interviews
  • Answering interviewer questions
  • Salary negotiation procedure
  • Self-presentation practice in small groups
  • Typical working conditions for academic job starters
  • Visa conditions for job search and employment (only for foreigners)
  • German cultural rules at work (Germans are welcome)

Subject “Salaries”

In a live webinar we will talk about typical salaries for job starters and criteria which can influence the salary. We practice a salary calculation method you can use to determine a salary for a specific position. At the end various research options are introduced which you can use to find out more about a company´s internal salary structure.

Subject “Job Interviews“

In a self-study training you get general information about your preparation for job interviews, including suitable clothing, time of arrival and research about the company. You learn more about the classical interview structure and receive advice for a professional self-introduction and special interview situations such as online or by telephone. Subsequently, a video seminar explains the correct way to procedure in a salary negotiation, incl. typical mistakes and alternative options to substitute a lower payment. In a follow-up workshop we work out answers for typical questions a recruiter asks you during the interview. In further small-group practices you can exercise your self-presentation and get feedback.

Subject “Employment Conditions”

In a video course you will learn about the nine most important topics of an employment contract. For each topic, the minimum legal regulations, the expected conditions for an academic career starter and the maximum regulations in the industry are presented. In addition, typical formulations for the contract text are shown. Furthermore, the calculation of the gross salary to the net salary is explained. The course will help you to understand the employment contract and to decide whether the conditions offered are comparatively good or bad.

Subject “Work Permit”

In this self-learning unit, you obtain an outline of work permits and their requirements. Additionally, you get information about the job search period and your options to stay in Germany. For each topic, the responsible authorities, necessary documents and requirements are explained. At the end you will receive a list of things to prepare and where you can get further information.

Subject “Work Culture”

To start working successfully in Germany you should be familiar with the German cultural standards and their influence on the work sphere. In this seminar we discuss the typical German way of working and behaviour of your German colleagues. We will find out why things are done in a certain way and what goals Germans pursue with it but also which conflicts may occur. Moreover, there will reflect your own experiences with the German culture. Additionally, we define the role of an employee and a superior. At the end, we will compare your native culture with the German culture and use case studies to practice analysing different perspectives and discuss possible solutions to avoid misunderstandings.
