[IAMO/IPB GS] Successfully shaping the doctoral phase (February-April 2022 | online)

Written by

There are free slots in this workshop series organised by the IAMO Graduate School and Leibniz Research School PlantBioChem at IPB.

A productive and professional supervision relationship makes a decisive contribution to the success of the doctorate. The workshop series aims to empower supervisors and doctoral researchers in establishing a fruitful supervision relationship. Considering the specific needs and tasks of supervisors and doctoral researchers, the workshop series has a two-track approach:

The Track for Doctoral Researchers aims to support doctoral researchers to manage their doctoral project and the challenges of the academic world successfully as well as to contribute their share to a successful supervision relationship. This track explores topics like productivity and provides tools to structure the day in a way that it aids concentration and focus; it provides strategies for managing well-being in research; it helps to identify procrastination loops and drivers of motivation; it discusses how to interpret feedback, to manage expectations, or to navigate different types of supervisors.

Successful Networking (March, 8, 10, 2022 | online)

Learning new communication skills

Networking well done is about nurturing relationships authentically around common interests, mutual liking, or simply respect. Yet many professionals find it difficult to do; they object to it and only turn to networking when they absolutely need help.

It doesn’t have to be this way. If we do it well, the relationships we nurture become critical to our ability to get things done, get ahead, and develop personally and professionally.
The goal of this workinar (workshop meets webinar) is to identify and unlock successful networking behaviours and learn new ways of communicating. How can I best introduce myself to others? What is most important about reaching out to contacts? Working together we will mobilize your most promising networking skills (both for academic and non-academic opportunities).

Introduction to Statistics and R (March, 7, 14, 21, 28, 2022)

Content

R has become a leading statistical programming language in data science and statistics. The R software is free, highly extensible, and allows to easily produce publication-quality plots. The aim of this course is to equip participants with the basic skills to effectively use the software R, embedded in the user interface RStudio. These skills will cover data import, processing and data exploration, graphical representations with ggplot2, basic concepts of statistical inference and linear regression. All topics will be demonstrated in working examples and practiced with hands on examples.

The course will be split in two parts. In the first two days we are going to teach the basic functionality of R, RStudio, and ggplot2. Day three and four are dedicated to the application of statistical tests, which will be extended to linear mixed-effects models.

Support for young scientists with care responsibilities

Written by

Individuals who care for children or family members and teach and conduct research at the same time are currently facing very special challenges, as the Corona pandemic continues to result in frequent caregiver absences.

Please check the following document for your application to student assistant funds via FEMPOWER@MLU, a project of the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity (website) at MLU.

Numerous studies show that the care of (younger) children and the care of relatives in particular leads to considerable burdens for the persons concerned and consequently to strong delays in their qualification and further career steps. The Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity would like to mitigate this disadvantage in the form of personnel support by research assistants.
