Lektüren: „Herding Donkeys“
Pünktlich zur heutigen Kongresswahl 2010 ist in den USA ein Buch erschienen, das die Erfolgsgeschichte der demokratischen Partei in der letzten Dekade nachzeichnet. Im Jahre 2006 übernahmen die Demokraten erstmals seit 1994 wieder die Mehrheit in beiden Kammern des Kongresses. Dass dieser Wahlerfolg nicht von ungefähr kam, illustriert das Buch „Herding Donkeys“ von Ari Berman auf eindrucksvolle Weise. Es zeichnet die Geschichte seit der Wahlniederlage Gores im Jahr 2000 hinter den Kulissen nach und zeigt, dass der Erfolg der Demokraten nicht erst mit einem Präsidentschaftskandidaten namens Barack Obama begann.
Vor allem handelt das Buch von Howard Dean, seines Zeichens früherer Gouverneur von Vermont und Präsidentschaftskandidat 2004, bevor er in den Vorwahlen von John Kerry ausgestochen wurde. Aber zwei Dinge hat Dean bereits damals beispielhaft implementiert, auf die Obama 2008 zurückgreifen konnte: zum einen die Rolle des Internets in Wahlkämpfen und zum anderen die Umsetzung der Fünfzig-Staaten-Strategie. Ausführlich beschreibt Berman den Wahlkampf 2004, Deans anschließende Bemühungen, die Strukturen der demokratischen Partei zu modernisieren, die Auseinandersetzungnzwischen Hillary Clinton und Barack Obama und schließlich die Wahl Obamas zum 44. US-Präsidenten. Dabei profitierte letzterer von Deans Bemühungen, mit der Parteiorganisation und dem Wahlkampf in allen 50 Bundesstaaten – quasi auf Graswurzelebene („grassroots“) – vertreten zu sein und sich nicht auf nur wenige „demokratische“ Bundesstaaten zu beschränken, wie es Gore noch 2000 versucht hatte und gescheitert war. Mit einem Mal konnte Obama 2008 Bundesstaaten gewinnen, die zuvor teilweise seit Jahrzehnten nicht von demokratischen Präsidentschaftskandidaten gewonnen werden konnten.
Das Buch wird nicht zuletzt dadurch äußerst lesenswert, dass Berman großartige Geschichten und Anekdoten erzählen kann, ohne dass er mit diesen zu weit von seiner eigentlichen Argumentation abschweifen muss. Offen ist, ob diese Erfolgsgeschichte mit dem heutigen Tag eine Unterbrechung oder gar ein vorläufiges Ende findet und/oder ob die demokratische Partei bei der Präsidentschaftswahl 2012 an die von Berman beschriebenen Erfolge anknüpfen kann.
