Lektüren I
Von Zeit zu Zeit sollen hier interessante, aktuelle und/oder unterhaltende Bücher aus der Politik bzw. der Politikwissenschaft vorgestellt werden. Den Anfang macht heute Edward M. Kennedy: True Compass (Twelve/Hachette Book Group 2009).
Leider hat Kennedy das Erscheinen seiner Memoiren nicht mehr erleben können, er verstarb am 25. August 2009, wenige Wochen vor der Veröffentlichung des Buches.
Im Jahr 1932 als Bruder von John F. und Bobby Kennedy geboren, spannt sein politisches Leben mehr als 45 Jahre im US-Senat. Dort hat er sich in vielen Auseinandersetzungen und Diskussionen einen Namen gemacht als Kämpfer einer Krankenversicherung für alle, für Arbeitnehmerstandards und eine Außenpolitik mit Augenmaß. Er dürfte die Arbeit und die Arbeitsweise des Senats geprägt haben wie nur wenige andere.
Gleichfalls Thema des Buches ist der Präsidentschaftswahlkampf und die Präsidentschaft seines Bruders John F. und die Präsidentschaftskampagne von Bobby, bevor dieser am Abend der Vorwahl in Kalifornien ebenfalls erschossen wurde, außerdem seine eigenen Pläne für das Weiße Haus, als er 1980 Jimmy Carter herausforderte und knapp unterlag (Carter verlor dann in der Hauptwahl gegen Ronald Reagan). Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama – das Leben Kennedys ist zugleich eine Geschichte der Demokratischen Partei der USA.
Aber das Buch handelt nicht nur von Geschichte, es bietet darüber hinaus eine Reihe großartiger Geschichten. Etwa wie Kennedy 1960 in den Weststaaten der USA Wahlkampf für seinen Bruder machte und auch nicht davor zurückschreckte, beim Rodeoreiten mitzumachen oder von einer Skischanze herunter zu springen – solange die Teilnehmer und Besucher hinterher seiner Wahlkampfrede lauschten. Überhaupt macht das den Reiz des Buches aus: die Beschreibung von Politik vor Ort, das Händeschütteln, das Überzeugen von Wählern, das Ringen um politische Positionen, das Austüfteln der erfolgversprechendsten Wahlstrategie.
Insgesamt hat Edward Kennedy ein großes Buch hinterlassen, das mit seinen 530 Seiten auch äußerlich recht voluminös ausgefallen ist. Dank des derzeit günstigen Euro-Kurses ist das Buch hierzulande zudem deutlich „günstiger“ zu haben als die 35 US-Dollar, für die das Buch in den USA verkauft wird.
