Die Tea Party Bewegung schickt bei der US-Kongresswahl am 2. November 2010 viele Kandidaten ins Rennen, Marco Rubio (39) ist einer von ihnen. In Florida will er zum neuen Senator des Bundesstaates in Washington gewählt werden. Derzeit liegt der Republikaner weit vor seinem Gegenkandidaten von den Demokraten. Keine Chance dürfte auch Charlie Crist haben, langjähriger Gouverneur in Florida und ebenfalls Republikaner. Er unterlag als politisch moderater Politiker Rubio in der Vorwahl und tritt im November als unabhängiger Kandidat an.
Bis vor kurzem galt Crist noch als populärster Politiker Floridas und war 2008 lange Zeit Favorit auf den Posten des Vizepräsidentschaftskandidaten unter John McCain. Aber Florida, von der aktuellen Wirtschaftskrise hart getroffen, ist inzwischen einer der Bundesstaaten, in denen die Tea Party zu einer einflussreichen politischen Kraft angewachsen ist.
