Gestorben: Geraldine Ferraro (1935-2011)
Sie war im Jahre 1984 die erste Frau auf dem Präsidentschafts-„Ticket“ einer der beiden großen Parteien in den USA: Geraldine Ferraro (danach dauerte es 24 Jahre, bis 2008 mit Sarah Palin eine weitere Frau für das Amt der Vizepräsidentin kandidierte). Nun ist Ferraro 75-jährig gestorben.
Zusammen mit Walter Mondale erlitt sie 1984 gegen Ronald Reagan allerdings eine krachende Niederlage: zwar gewannen sie für die Demokratische Partei 40,6 Prozent der Stimmen (Reagan: 58,8 Prozent), aufgrund des Wahlsystems der USA kamen sie aber gerade einmal auf 13 (von 538) Wahlmännerstimmen, nämlich zehn aus Mondales Heimatstaat Minnesota und drei aus der Hauptstadt Washington (das entspricht 2,4 Prozent).
