Robert Bork gestorben
Nachdem vorgestern bereits der derzeit am längsten dem US-Senat angehörende Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) verstorben ist, starb am heutigen Vormittag mit Robert Bork eine konservative Ikone. Bork war am ehesten dafür bekannt, was er nicht war: ein Richter des amerikanischen Supreme Court nämlich.
1987 hatte ihn der damalige Präsident Ronald Reagan als Richter am höchsten Gericht der Vereinigten Staaten nominiert, und nach einem mehrtägigen Anhörungsmarathon im Senat unter dem Vorsitz des damaligen Rechtsausschussvorsitzenden Joe Biden (D-Delaware) musste Reagan seine Nominierung zurückziehen. Schon damals war die Ernennung von Richtern für den Supreme Court eine augenscheinlich sehr schwierige Angelegenheit. Die Auswirkungen der gescheiterten Bork-Nominierung sind nach Auffassung vieler Beobachter bis heute zu spüren. Zuletzt fungierte Bork als Berater der Präsidentschaftskampagne von Mitt Romney. Die New York Times hat auf ihrer Internetseite einen sehr umfassenden Nachruf veröffentlicht, die Washington Post ebenfalls.
