Sturm auf das Kapitol – ein Jahr danach
Am heutigen Donnerstag jährt sich der Sturm auf das Kapitol in Washington DC. Rekonstruktionen der damaligen Erignisse finden sich zum Beispiel hier, hier und hier. In diesem Artikel beleuchten Shane Goldmacher und Maggie Haberman die zentrale Rolle, die Donald Trump – auch ohne das Amt des Präsidenten – nach wie vor in der Republikanischen Partei spielt. Ashley Parker, Amy Gardner und Josh Dawsey berichten in diesem Beitrag, wie Trump es vermochte, einen Großteil der Republikanischen Anhänger dazu zu bringen, seine Behauptung der Wahlfälschung zu übernehmen. Und hier fragen Jonathan Weisman und Luke Broadwater nach den Erfahrungen, die diejenigen Republikanischen Abgeordneten gemacht haben, die sich im zweiten Impeachmentverfahren vor einem Jahr gegen die eigene Partei und den eigenen Präsidenten gestellt haben und für die Amtsenthebung Trumps gestimmt haben.
In einen größeren Kontext stellen die beiden Bonner Politikwissenschaftler Philipp Adorf und Patrick Horst den Kapitolssturm in ihrem Buch „Zerreißprobe für die Demokratie“, das vor wenigen Wochen erschienen ist. Darin beschreiben sie zunächst das erste Impeachmentverfahren gegen Präsident Donald Trump, um anschließend ausführlich das Wahljahr 2020 einschließlich der Vorwahlen, der Parteitage, der Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie auf den Wahlkampf sowie das detaillierte Wahlergebnis zu erörtern. In einem Ausblick bilanzieren die Autoren die Trump-Präsidentschaft und schauen auf den Beginn der Biden-Präsidentschaft. Schließlich thematisieren sie an dieser Stelle noch die parteipolitische Polarisierung in den Vereinigten Staaten einschließlich der „Dysfunktionen und Blockaden im System“. Das Buch wurde bereits für unsere Universitätsbibliothek bestellt.
