Karl Schlögel: „American Matrix“
Der Historiker Karl Schlögel, der bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 2013 an den Universitäten Konstanz und Frankfurt (Oder) lehrte, ist vor allem als Osteuropa-Experte bekannt. Seit dem Beginn des russischen Angriffskriegs auf die Ukraine ist er darüber hinaus in zahlreichen Medien präsent. Auch sein jüngstes Buch „Entscheidung in Kiew. Ukrainische Lektionen“ befasst sich mit der Ukraine sowie mit aktuellen Entwicklungen in Osteuropa generell. Im Verlaufe seiner Karriere war Schlegel aber immer auch als Wissenschaftler und „einfacher“ Besucher in den Vereinigten Staaten unterwegs. Vor wenigen Tagen hat er mit „American Matrix“ ein voluminöses, über 800 Seiten starkes Werk vorgelegt, das als Quintessenz seiner Beschäftigung mit Geschichte, Politik und Gesellschaft Amerikas gelten kann. In diesem Buch vermisst er den „amerikanischen Raum“ des 20. Jahrhunderts und verbindet darin Aspekte wie Stadtentwicklung, Wissenschaft, Campusleben, Architektur, alltägliche Lebensweisen, Aufstieg und Niedergang ganzer Industrien, Mobilität im Wandel und vieles mehr miteinander und begibt sich auch auf die Spuren von Autoren, die vor ihm das Land bereist haben, etwa Alexis de Tocqueville und Max Weber. Kurz: er beschreibt den American Way of Life in seinen unterschiedlichen Facetten und macht sich auf die Suche nach dem American Dream. Entstanden ist ein äußerst kluges, vielschichtiges und differenziertes Buch über ein Land, das „keinen Traditionen verpflichtet“ war und ist, wie es auf der Verlagsseite heißt – ein lesenswertes und kenntnisreiches Buch, dem man viele Leserinnen und Leser wünschen möchte.
