Neuerscheinung: „Das gespaltene Haus“ von Manfred Berg
Rechtzeitig zum Beginn der heißen Phase des Präsidentschaftswahlkampfes in den Vereinigten Staaten ist bei Klett-Cotta das Buch „Das gespaltene Haus“ des Heidelberger Historikers Manfred Berg erschienen. Darin beschreibt er die im politischen System der USA heute alles überlagernde politische Polarisierung und führt sie auf zentrale Entwicklungen in Politik und Gesellschaft seit den 1950er Jahren zurück. Auf über 500 Seiten gelingt ihm ein höchst lesenswertes, detailliertes und kenntnisreiches Werk, in dem er die vergangenen Jahrzehnte im Rahmen einer „langen Geschichte“ (S. 9) lebendig werden lässt.
Immer wieder greift Berg in seinem Buch auch politikwissenschaftlich relevante Aspekte auf, etwa wenn er das zugrundeliegende System der „Checks and Balances“ erläutert, die Handlungsmöglichkeiten und -limitationen im Amte des Präsidenten skizziert, auf die Entwicklung von Parteien und Wahlkämpfen eingeht oder längerfristige Veränderungen in der politischen Kultur beschreibt.
