Barack Obama hat das Nachrichtenjahr 2009 geprägt wie niemand sonst. Nicht zufällig beschäftigen sich mehrere Tipps der Leser und Nutzer hier im Blog in Bezug auf ihr „Buch des Jahres“ mit Büchern von bzw. über Obama. Warum gehen Menschen in die Politik?
Und diese Tradition beruhe auf dem einfachen Gedanken, dass wir gemeinsame Interessen mit unseren Mitmenschen hätten, dass uns mehr miteinander verbinde als trenne und dass wir, wenn genug Menschen an diese Idee glaubten und danach handelten, zwar nicht alle Probleme lösen, aber etwas Sinnvolles erreichen könnten.
So beantwortet Barack Obama diese Frage für sich persönlich – in seinem Buch „Hoffnung wagen“. Er ist in die Politik gegangen, weil er dachte, er hätte etwas darüber zu sagen, welche Richtung die USA einschlagen sollte . Das schrieb er vor knapp vier Jahren. Mittlerweile ist Barack Obama in der Tat der Mann, der seinem Land die Richtung vorgibt.
Sein Amtsantritt als 44. US-Präsident vor knapp einem Jahr war ein Schicksalstag für Amerika. Er gab dieser durch Krise und Kriege gezeichneten Nation etwas, was sie in ihrer Verzweiflung nicht dringender brauchen konnten: Hoffnung. Damit ist Obama ein Wagnis eingegangen, das für ihn zugleich zum Segen und Fluch wurde. Er verdankt diesem Wagnis seine Präsidentschaft, die zugleich genau darunter leidet. Von „Yes, we can“ zu „Yes, we will“, so wird er dieser Tage kritisiert. Der niederländische Autor Leon de Winter übte jüngst vernichtende Kritik an Obama, bewertete ihn als Mann ohne Eigenschaften (zu lesen in der Januar-Ausgabe der Zeitschrift CICERO).
Wieso Obama das gerade nicht ist, erfährt man in seinem bemerkenswerten Buch. Es steckt voller Informationen nicht nur über seine Person, seine Werte und Ideale, sondern vor allem auch über seine Pläne und Visionen für die Zukunft der USA. Man wird in die Lage versetzt, den politischen Prozess in Amerika nachzuvollziehen, und man lernt die (privaten) Schwierigkeiten eines Berufspolitikers kennen, der zwischen Familie und Politik hin- und herpendelt. Dass es unheimlich spannend und kurzweilig ist, dieses Buch zu lesen, liegt nicht nur am aktuellen Interesse an seiner Person, sondern vor allem auch an seinem klaren, schönen Schreibstil und einer Mischung aus Humor und aufrechter Selbstkritik, die sich durch das ganze Werk zieht. Es sind die intimen Momente, wie jene Begegnung Obamas mit George W. Bush, der sich die Hände desinfizieren lässt, nachdem er Obama eben seine geschüttelt hat (aus rein hygienischen Gründen), die dieses Buch auch zum politischen Amüsement machen. Viele wörtliche Zitate ermöglichen dem Leser dabei, in die Szenerie einzutauchen und einen interessanten Mann beim Durchlaufen seiner Lebensstationen zu beobachten, von seiner Provenienz in Indonesien bis zum Senat in Washington D.C.
Hoffnung wagen ist mein politisches Buch des Jahres 2009, weil es zum einen die Hoffnung rechtfertigt, die seit seiner Wahl zum Präsidenten in ihn gesetzt wird, zum anderen aber sein Handeln als Präsident verstehen lässt, weil es Einblicke in seine politische Motivation erlaubt. Es ist ein schönes und ehrliches Gegenstück zu Leon de Winters Verschwörungstheorie und es schafft eine gute Grundlage, die Ereignisse um die Person des Präsidenten zu verstehen. Man sollte dieses Buch durchaus als politisches Programm begreifen. Von seinem ersten Amtsjahr darf man indes nur enttäuscht sein, wenn man ihn als von den Medien hochstilisierten Messias ansieht. Wenn man fair ist, sollte man seine Erfolge an den Möglichkeiten messen, die das präsidentielle Regierungssystem der USA und eine multilaterale Welt hergeben. Die wohl wichtigste Maßgabe ist aber dieses Buch. Hat man es gelesen, kann und sollte man auf seine nächsten Amtsjahre durchaus gespannt sein.
