All eyes on Michigan
Im Vorwahlkampf des Jahres 2016 konnte Bernie Sanders mit einem Sieg in Michigan das Rennen um die Nominierung der Demokratischen Partei auf den Kopf stellen (Vorwahlumfragen hatten eine Niederlage Sanders‘ mit dreißig Prozentpunkten Unterschied vorausgesehen – wie das passieren konnte, kann man übrigens hier nachlesen), auch wenn sich später seine Konkurrentin Hillary Clinton als Präsidentschaftskandidatin der Demokraten durchsetzen konnte. Bei der morgigen Vorwahl könnte Michigan genau den gegenteiligen Effekt für Sanders bedeuten. Schafft er hier kein überragendes Ergebnis, dürfte die Kandidatur auf Joe Biden hinauslaufen, der erst in den letzten Stunden von seinen früheren Mitbewerbern Kamala Harris und Cory Booker offiziell unterstützt wurde (und der seit seinen Siegen am Super Tuesday von einer Welle der Unterstützung getragen wird). Zudem ist Sanders bislang den Beweis schuldig geblieben, dass er die Basis seines Elektorats verbreitern kann – was im Hinblick auf seine „Wählbarkeit“ bei der Präsidentschaftswahl im November 2020 von entscheidender Bedeutung wäre, hat Donald Trump sich 2016 doch gerade durch Erfolge in Staaten des Mittleren Westens (Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, etc.) die Präsidentschaft sichern können.
