Lektüretipp: „Die Hölle und andere Reiseziele“ von Madeleine Albright
Seit fast zwanzig Jahren ist sie nun nicht mehr im Amt: die frühere Außenministerin unter Präsident Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright. In diesem Amt war sie als erste Frau tätig, bereits zuvor war sie US-Botschafterin bei den Vereinten Nationen, Professorin für Politikwissenschaft, Rollenmodell, Modeikone sowie Mutter gewesen – und Flüchtling, denn 1948 kam sie, im Jahre 1937 in Prag geboren, als junges Mädchen mit ihrer Familie nach dem dortigen kommunistischen Staatsstreich aus der Tschechoslowakei in die Vereinigten Staaten. Über ihr (früheres) Leben und ihre Amtszeit hat sie bereits hier berichtet, in ihrem neuen Buch beschreibt Albright nunmehr ihre Erfahrungen aus der Zeit seit dem Ausscheiden aus dem State Department: sie lehrt erneut an der Universität, gründet eine eigene Beratungsfirma, unterstützt Stiftungen und Bürgerrechtsgruppen, die sich für Demokratie und Menschenrechte einsetzen und vieles mehr. Dazu schildert ihre Erfahrungen mit drei ganz unterschiedlichen Präsidenten: George W. Bush, Barack Obama und Donald Trump. Das Buch bietet höchst interessante Einblicke in die Zeit nach einer politischen Karriere, dazu ist es an vielen Stellen humorvoll geschrieben und schildert die eine oder andere amüsante Anekdote. Durch das Buch zieht sich jedoch ihr unbedingter Einsatz für die Demokratie, insbesondere in Transformationsländern, und ihr Einsatz für den guten Zweck, wie auch immer er konkret aussehen mag. Nicht zuletzt ist sie eine Freundin des deutlichen Wortes. Fazit: unbedingte Leseempfehlung!

P.S.: wer sich über den ungewöhnlichen Titel des Buches wundert: dieser ist eine Anspielung auf die vermutlich bekannteste Aussage aus einer ihrer Reden: „There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.“
