„Die Geschichte der Bundesrepublik ist auch eine Geschichte der Zivilgesellschaft“, konstatiert der Politikwissenschaftler Edgar Grande in der Einleitung des von ihm (mit)herausgegebenen Bandes „Zivilgesellschaft der Bundesrepublik Deutschland“. Auf der Verlagswebseite heißt es über das Buch: „Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Praxis nehmen zivilgesellschaftliche Schlüsselakteure wie Gewerkschaften, soziale Bewegungen und Kirchen in den Blick und fragen nach ihrer Rolle in den Aufbruch- und Umbruchphasen der Bundesrepublik. Denn der wirtschaftliche Wiederaufbau, die gesellschaftliche Demokratisierung, die ‚Wiedervereinigung‘, die Entwicklung zur Migrationsgesellschaft und die Herausforderungen der Corona-Pandemie sind ohne den aktiven Beitrag der Zivilgesellschaft nicht zu verstehen.“
