Oktober-Heft von „WeltTrends“: die USA vor den Midterms
Anfang November 2022 werden in den Vereinigten Staaten beide Kammern des Kongresses, Senat (ein Drittel der 100 Sitze) und Repräsentantenhaus (alle 435 Wahlkreise), neu gewählt. Die Wahl entscheidet mit darüber, über welchen Handlungsspielraum Präsident Joe Biden in den kommenden beiden Jahren verfügen wird. Zugleich wird die Wahl ein Stück weit ein Referendum über die bisherige Amtszeit Biden sein, auch wenn er selbst nicht auf dem Stimmzettel steht. Erfahrungsgemäß verliert die Partei des amtierenden Präsidenten in diesen Zwischenwahlen („Midterms“) regelmäßig Mandate. Nachdem die Republikaner noch vor wenigen Monaten von zahlreichen politischen Beobachtern als die sicheren Sieger der Wahl gesehen wurden, hat sich die politische Lage für die Demokraten zuletzt verbessert. Derzeit ist nicht ausgeschlossen, dass sie zumindest in einer der beiden Kammern ihre Mehrheit behaupten können.
Rechtzeitig vor dem Wahltermin ist soeben die Oktober-Ausgabe der politikwissenschaftlichen Zeitschrift WeltTrends (Universität Potsdam) erschienen, die unter der Überschrift „USA: Zerrissene Weltmacht“ in gleich mehreren Beiträgen auf die US-amerikanische Politik vor den Midterms blickt.
