In unseren Lehrveranstaltungen ist immer wieder auch das Thema politische. bzw. demokratische Architektur ein zentraler Untersuchungsgegenstand. Besonders gut kann dies im Kontext von Parlamentsarchitektur diskutiert werden. Auf diesen Seiten war das Thema immer wieder einmal Gegenstand der Blogeinträge, zum Beispiel hier und hier.
In einem ganz anderem Kontext ist mir die Parlamentsarchitektur bei einem Besuch im Potsdamer Museum Barberini am vergangenen Wochenende begegnet. Dort hängt das Bild „Das Parlament. Sonnenuntergang“ von Claude Monet (1900-1903), Teil einer 19teiligen Serie, in der Monet das britische Westminster-Parlamentsgebäude gemalt hat. Auf der Webseite des Barberini heißt es dazu: „Monet begann die Serie Houses of Parliament während seiner Aufenthalte in London zwischen 1899 und 1901 und arbeitete sie in seinem Atelier in Giverny weiter aus. Die Türme von Westminster Palace ragen als Silhouetten tiefblau in den von der untergehenden Sonne rotviolett gefärbten Himmel mit dem für London typischen Smog. Wie bei Monets Vorbildern William Turner und James Abbott McNeill Whistler zeigen sie sich vor dramatischem Wolkenhimmel oder verlieren sich im Nebel.“ Weitere Bilder dieser Reihe hängen im Musée d’Orsay in Paris, im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in der National Gallery of Art in Washington DC sowie im Kunsthaus Zürich.
Übrigens lohnt ein Besuch des Museum auch abseits des erwähnten Bildes. Das Barberini verfügt über eine umfangreiche Impressionisten-Sammlung, sie ist zugleich die größte Monet-Sammlung außerhalb von Paris. Und derzeit ist eine sehr sehenswerte Ausstellung rund um das Thema „Sonne – Die Quelle des Lichts in der Kunst“ zu sehen (Details hier).
