Im Juni 2009 nimmt die britische Schauspielerin und Oscar-Preisträgerin Tilda Swinton („Michael Clayton“, „Burn After Reading“) ihr Rad und fährt in Berlin den früheren Mauerverlauf ab – knapp 160 Kilometer rund um das alte West-Berlin.
Nicht mehr viel erinnert an die Mauer: Swinton radelt an schmucken Einfamilienhäusern, verlassenen Seen und mehr oder weniger bevölkerten Kinderspielplätzen vorbei. Und doch trifft sie immer wieder auf Spuren der Vergangenheit: ein stehen gelassenes Mauerstück, ein Mahnmal für an der Mauer zu Tode gekommene Flüchtlinge, Informationstafeln und ausrangierte Wachtürme.
Nur gelegentlich musikalisch instrumentiert und sparsam kommentiert von Swinton selbst, entwickelt sich für den Zuschauer eine suggestive Wirkung auf der Suche nach Spuren aus der Vergangenheit. Inzwischen verläuft auf dem früheren Grenzstreifen der Berliner Mauer-Radweg. Nach der Wende hat man den alten Kolonnenweg der DDR-Grenztruppen asphaltiert und links und rechts des Weges die Natur sich selbst überlassen. So ist eine malerische und abwechslungsreiche und doch historische Route entstanden.
Mit dieser Tour knüpft Swinton übrigens an ein früheres Projekt namens „Cycling the Wall“ an: bereits im Jahr 1988 fuhr sie die gleiche Runde, damals jedoch direkt an der Berliner Mauer entlang (auch dieser Film ist Bestandteil der DVD). Interessant ist der Film besonders dann, wenn man Bilder, Eindrücke und Orte des einen Films im anderen Film wiedererkennt.
