Please meet President Barack Clinton
Das hat es wohl noch nicht gegeben: die Journalisten des White House Press Corps staunten nicht schlecht, als am Freitag nicht wie gewöhnlich der Pressesprecher zum Pressebriefing erschien, sondern Präsident Obama selbst, im Schlepptau Amtsvorvorgänger Bill Clinton. Vollends irritiert waren sie, als Obama sich während eines Statements von Ex-Präsident Clinton entschuldigte, weil er seiner Frau versprochen habe, gemeinsam eine Weihnachtsfeier zu besuchen. Sprach’s und verabschiedete sich und ließ Clinton alleine am Rednerpult zurück. Der schien Gefallen an der Sache gefunden zu haben, dass er zurück im Scheinwerferlicht war, und wenn es auch nur für wenige Minuten war.
Hintergrund des Besuchs Clintons im Weißen Haus war dessen Unterstützung für den Deal bezüglich der Fortsetzung der Steuererleichterungen aus der Ära Bush, den das Weiße Haus mit den Republikanern im Kongress ausgehandelt und in der letzten Woche öffentlich gemacht hatte. Viele Demokraten sind überzeugt, dass der Deal zu weit geht und die Demokraten zentrale eigene Prinzipien verletzen würden, sollten sie diesem Kompromiss zustimmen. Clinton hat sich am Freitag eindeutig positioniert und sich hinter den Deal gestellt.

Den Amtsvorvorgänger einen Teil der Arbeit übernehmen zu lassen, ist ja in der Tat eine höchst effektive Form der Aufgabenteilung.
Vielleicht kann man in diesem Sinne auch mal einen Vertreter der vorangegangen Studentengeneration die nächste Klausur oder Hausarbeit schreiben lassen 😉

Ein „echter Gigant“ der US-Außenpolitik
Der langjährige US-Spitzendiplomat Holbrooke ist tot. Der 69-Jährige erlag nach Angaben des US-Präsidialamtes in einem Washingtoner Krankenhaus den Folgen eines Risses an der Hauptschlagader. Er war zuletzt Sondergesandter der Regierung Obama für Pakistan und Afghanistan.

Ja, das habe ich vorhin auch im Radio gehört. Unabhängig von der Parteizugehörigkeit verliert Washington damit einen seiner profiliertesten Diplomaten, der 1993/1994 als Botschafter in Bonn fungierte und dann verantwortlich war für den erfolgreichen Abschluss der Friedensverhandlungen von Dayton, die den Bosnienkrieg beendeten (darüber hat er übrigens mit „To End a War“ ein lesenswertes Buch geschrieben).
Hätten Al Gore und/oder John Kerry ihre Präsidentschaftswahlen gewonnen, wäre er wohl Außenminister geworden. Unter Obama wurde Hillary Clinton Außenministerin und Holbrooke Sondergesandter für Afghanistan und Pakistan. Wegen seiner Verhandlungsmethoden gelegentlich der „Bulldozer“ genannt, braucht es vermutlich gerade eine solche Linie, um Ergebnisse zu erzielen.
