Heute tritt auf Capitol Hill in Washington der am 3. November 2020 gewählte 117. US-Kongress erstmals zusammen – und das unter ganz außergewöhnlichen Umständen, die nicht nur der aktuell grassierenden Cororona-Pandemie geschuldet sind (erst gestern hatten die Vereinigten Staaten über 290.000 neue Fälle zu verzeichnen). Noch gar nicht sicher ist, ob die amtierende Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi erneut zur Parlamentspräsidentin gewählt wird, ist die Mehrheit der Demokraten im Repräsentantenhaus doch bei der Wahl im November stark geschrumpft. Und gleich eine Reihe von Abgeordneten und Senatoren der Republikanischen Partei hat angekündigt, der offiziellen Bestätigung des Ergebnisses der Präsidentschaftswahl, in der der Demokrat Joe Biden im Electoral College eine deutliche Mehrheit der Wahlleute für sich gewinnen konnte, nicht zustimmen zu wollen.
