Lektüretipp: „Europa – wo bist Du?“ von Alex Rühle
Es ist der 10. März 2022, als der SZ-Journalist Alex Rühle, ausgestattet mit einem Interrail-Ticket, einem Laptop und einem Notizblock, daheim aufbricht, um innerhalb von 100 Tagen 24 Länder der Europäischen Union (EU) zu besuchen. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Reise steht die Frage, was eigentlich diese EU ausmacht – ein Projekt, das einst die vielleicht kühnste Erfindung der Politikgeschichte war (so Rühle), aber seit vielen Jahren eine Krise nach der anderen bewältigen muss.
So spürt der Autor in Athen den Folgen der Eurokrise nach, besucht die Schauplätze der Balkankriege, lernt in Litauen die unterschiedlichen Facetten der Geschichtspolitik und Erinnerungskultur kennen, erforscht, wie die Gentrifizierung die Lissabonner Altstadt verändert und diskutiert in Schweden die Argumente für und gegen einen NATO-Beitritt des Landes. In der spanischen Exklave Ceuta steht die europäische Migrationspolitik im Mittelpunkt, und in Straßburg und Brüssel lernt Rühle die EU-Maschinerie aus der Binnenperspektive heraus kennen. Am Ende ist ein sehr lesenswerter und kurzweiliger Mix aus „Krisentagebuch, Essay und Reisemitschnitt in einem“ (S. 13) entstanden, der nur wärmstens zur Lektüre empfohlen werden kann.
Im Schlusskapitel resümiert Rühl, dass er vermutlich keine elementaren Lektionen, eindeutigen Antworten oder Großthesen formulieren kann; stattdessen ist ein Mosaik entstanden. Gerade weil er auf seinem Trip nicht (nur) mit politischen Akteuren spricht, sondern auch mit Wissenschaftlern/innen, anderen Journalisten/innen sowie Personen im alltäglichen Kontext, entsteht ein buntes Bild dessen, was die EU ausmacht. Und natürlich spielt auch der Krieg Russlands gegen die Ukraine immer wieder eine zentrale Rolle.
