Washington: Showdown im Haushaltsstreit
Bis zum Wochenende haben die Republikaner im Kongress Zeit, einen ernsthaften Vorschlag zur Lösung der festgefahrenen Fronten im Haushaltsstreit vorzulegen. Bis August muss die Schuldenobergrenze von 14,3 Billionen US-Dollar angehoben werden, da den Vereinigten Staaten ansonsten die Zahlungsunfähigkeit droht. Republikaner einerseits und die Demokraten mit Präsident Obama an der Spitze andererseits sind sich uneinig darüber, ob Steuern erhöht, Subventionen gekürzt oder anderweitige Strategien verfolgt werden sollen, um das Haushaltsdefizit in Grenzen zu halten.
Die WELT beschreibt die jungen, oft konservativen Abgeordneten der Republikanischen Fraktion im Repräsentantenhaus, denen nicht an Ausgleich und Kompromiss gelegen ist, sondern nur ein Ziel verfolgen: Barack Obama zu einem OneTerm President zu machen.
