Seit vielen Jahren wird in der politikwissenschaftlichen Forschung (und darüber hinaus) die parteipolitische Polarisierung in den Vereinigten Staaten erforscht und diskutiert. Dabei rücken beide politische Parteien ideologisch auseinander, die politische Mitte verschwindet. Gerade letztere wäre aber wichtig, um in einem präsidentiellen Regierungssystem der „checks and balances“ Politik überhaupt erst möglich zu machen. Mit dem amtierenden Präsidenten Donald Trump scheint diese Polarisierung einen Höhepunkt erreicht zu haben, sie lässt sich aber bereits seit mehreren Jahrzehnten konstatieren. Und nicht nur die Politik, insbesondere der US-Kongress, und die Parteien sind betroffen: diese Polarisierung ist auch in der Gesellschaft, in den Medien sowie geografisch zu erkennen. Der Politikwissenschaftler Torben Lütjen hat die zentralen Befunde zu diesem Thema in einem neuen Buch zusammengefasst, das vor wenigen Wochen erschienen ist.
